Inspiring Little Authors Through Real-World Learning
I recently had the honour of participating in the Real World Learning (RWL) program, an experience that truly highlighted the power of hands-on education. Last month, I visited a Grade 1–2 classroom at Swift Water Elementary School, where students embarked on an exciting journey of writing and publishing their very own book.
We began by reading one of my children’s stories as inspiration. Together, we explored themes of growth mindset and resilience, helping students understand that challenges—both in stories and in real life—can be overcome through creativity, perseverance, and self-belief.
Encouraging Creativity Through Storytelling
To start the writing process, students participated in a guided visualization exercise. They imagined an obstacle standing in their way and wrote about how they would overcome it. Their stories were filled with dragons, giant stones, and imaginative challenges, each solved with courage and creativity. This activity encouraged critical thinking, problem-solving, and storytelling skills at an early age.
From Classroom Writing to Book Publishing
The Real World Learning program is proudly student-driven, so once the stories were underway, we discussed what the students wanted to do with them. When the idea of publishing a book came up, the excitement was contagious. The class is now hoping to visit a local printing press to learn how books are made and to see their stories come to life in print.
Supporting Young Writers Beyond the Classroom
Students are continuing their writing journey through my online program, the Little Authors Writing Course. This guided course supports young writers through every stage—from idea development to a finished, published book—while offering feedback and live support along the way.
I’m already looking forward to my next visit, where we’ll celebrate their completed books and the incredible creativity they’ve brought to life. Watching these young authors grow in confidence, imagination, and writing skills has been a true privilege.
